Withhold Client Contact Info
When you refer a case you still represent, you can withhold the client's contact info until you're ready to share it. The receiving attorney sees the case and the client's first name and last initial, but not their phone number or email.
This is useful for midstream referrals, where your client doesn't know about the referral yet. You can match with the right attorney first, talk to your client, then share their contact info so the handoff goes smoothly.
Withhold contact info on a case you're referringWhen you post a case:
- Go to Post a case and fill in the case details as usual.
- In the Client Information step, check I currently represent this client. The client's contact info then stays hidden until you share it after a match.
- Post the case.
On a case you've already posted:
Open the case, click the case menu, and turn on Withhold Client Contact Info. You can turn it on or off any time before the case is matched. After a match, the setting is locked, and the only option is to share contact info.
Share contact info after a matchOnce the case is matched, the receiving attorney sees:
- The case details and fee, as usual
- The client's first name and last initial (for example, Maria G.)
- A Contact Withheld label in place of the client's phone and email
The case shows as Waiting on you and appears in My Tasks under Handoffs to Coordinate.
When you've talked to your client and you're ready to hand off:
- Open the case and go to the Client Contact Info card. You can also start from the case in My Tasks.
- Click Share Contact Info.
- Check I've spoken with the client about this referral and confirm.
The receiving attorney is notified right away and can see the client's full contact info. The date and time you shared appear on the Client Contact Info card. Sharing can't be undone.
If you're the receiving attorneyA Contact Withheld label means the referring firm still represents the client and is telling them about the referral. The case is matched, but the client doesn't know about you yet.
You'll see this on the case profile, in My Tasks, and on the Matched tab, where the case shows a Currently Represented label. Until contact info is shared, the client appears by first name and last initial everywhere, including the case title.
- Don't contact the client. Please don't try to reach them through other channels. The referring firm will share their contact info once they've spoken with them.
- Find the case in My Tasks under Awaiting Contact Info.
- You'll get an email as soon as contact info is shared. The client's phone and email then appear on the case.
No clock runs while you wait. Escrow and your contact window start when the referring firm shares contact info, not when the case is matched. You can mark the client contacted once contact info is shared.
Sending cases through the Direct Share API or LitifyYou can withhold contact info on cases you send through the Direct Share API or Litify. Set clientCurrentlyRepresented to true when you create a case through the Direct Share API, or set client_currently_represented on the case in Litify. Contact info stays hidden until you share it from the case in Attorney Share, the same way as above.

Frequently asked questionsWhat does the receiving attorney see while contact info is withheld? The case details, the fee, and the client's first name and last initial. The client's phone number and email are hidden.
Can I turn withholding off after a match? No. After a match, the only option is to share contact info. You can turn withholding on or off any time before the case is matched.
Can I take contact info back after I share it? No. Once shared, the receiving attorney keeps access to the client's contact info.
Does withholding change the case status? No. The case stays Matched. It shows a Contact Withheld label until you share.
When do escrow and the contact window start? When the referring firm shares contact info, not at the match. Nothing runs against the receiving attorney while contact info is withheld.
Is withheld contact info included in emails and integrations? Not for the receiving firm. Until contact info is shared, emails, webhooks, and API responses sent to the receiving firm include only the client's first name and last initial. The match email explains that contact info will follow. The referring firm's own emails and integrations are unchanged.
