Creating A New Case

To create a new case, go to Marketplace or My Cases in the top navigation bar, then click Create Case in the upper-right corner of the screen.

For a step-by-step walkthrough, including a visual tour of each field, watch our short video tutorial here.

Required Case Details

When you create a case, you’ll be asked to enter key information so prospective attorneys can quickly understand the matter and determine fit. Please do not include confidential client information in any free-text fields.

  • Case name – A short, clear label for the referral (for example, “Major trucking accident on the 405 in Orange County, CA” or “Slip and fall inside a Walmart in Chicago, IL”).

  • Case type – Select the closest match from the Type dropdown. If you do not see your case type, contact support@attorneyshare.com.

  • Jurisdiction – Choose the appropriate option from the Jurisdiction dropdown.

  • Description – Add a brief, high-level summary of the matter. Avoid including any confidential client details.

  • Legal process stage – Select the option that best reflects where the matter currently stands. You can read more about process stages here: Legal Process Stages.

Client Contact Information

Client contact details are never public and are only shared with the attorney who is ultimately selected for the case.

  • Client name – The client’s first and last name.

  • Client phone – The client’s primary phone number.

  • Client email – The client’s email address.

Case Ownership and Notifications

You can assign which attorneys or case managers in your firm should own the case and act on it.

The assigned user will receive case update notifications and will be able to accept or decline the referral and manage next steps with the client.

Marketplace Visibility Options

When you create a case, you can choose how and where it is shared on Attorney Share:

  • Public Marketplace – List the case on the Attorney Share Marketplace so any eligible attorney can review and inquire.

  • Community Marketplace – Share the case with selected communities for priority access before it appears on the public Marketplace. Any user may post to Exclusive communities, but only members of those communities can take the case.

  • My Private Network – Send the case to your trusted referral partners in your private network. Attorney Share will distribute the case across your partners based on their practice areas and jurisdictions. If no one accepts, the case can flow to the public Marketplace.

  • Waterfall Referrals™ – Route the case through a predefined “waterfall” of up to three attorneys. Person A gets the first opportunity; if they decline, it moves to Person B, then Person C. If all decline, the case moves to the Public Marketplace. This gives your preferred partners right of first refusal with the safety net of the broader Marketplace.

Fees and Pricing

When you send out a case, you can set the referral fee you would like to receive. The default is 25%, but you can adjust this up or down based on the matter, and prospective attorneys can propose changes during negotiation.

You are solely responsible for complying with all applicable professional rules, including fee-sharing and referral rules, in every jurisdiction where you are licensed.

Data Room (Optional)

If you have helpful documents (for example, intake notes, police reports, or medical records), you can upload them to the Data Room when creating the case.

Prospective attorneys can request access before being selected. Once a case is matched, the selected attorney will automatically retain access, and any other temporary access will be revoked.

Extra Information (Optional but Helpful)

You can add additional details to help organize and qualify the case:

  • Case number – Your internal firm case or matter number.

  • Incident date – The date of the underlying incident, selected from the calendar.

  • Second language required – Choose a language if the client needs communication in a language other than English.
